D. Holtz
Bürgermeister

Dear Mayor for Peace,
we write to you from New York, where the world has gathered to review the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. As you have no doubt read in news reports, the atmosphere here is highly charged with both expectation and anxiety, making it difficult to foresee the final outcome of this process. Nonetheless, there is no question that the great issues of the day will be addressed more extensively than ever before, foremost among them: the abolition of nuclear weapons.
Our latest membership count is 3880 cities in 143 countries, putting us well within range of 4000 in May. It will send a very powerful message to the Review Conference when we report we have surpassed the 4000 mark. Not only does this make us by far the largest international, direct-membership association of local governments, but also the fastest growing, united in our determination to end the nuclear threat.
We urgently request that you to set aside a half hour this week to recruit one mayor you may know, whether from a neighboring city or a distant sister city. Please feel free to include this letter in your invitation to join our network. For your convenience we also attach the affiliation form they will need to submit. (Forms in other languages are available at: http://www.2020visioncampaign.org/pages/130/Members)
We are looking forward, the sooner the better, to making the big announcement and will directly mention every city that has contributed to this final push. So, please act now. We thank you in advance!
In peace,
Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba, Hiroshima, Japan, President
Mayor Luc Dehaene, Ypres, Belgium, Vice President
Mayor Tomihisa Taue, Nagasaki, Japan, Vice President
Mayor Josep Mayoral i Antigas, Granollers, Spain, Vice President
Mayor Bob Harvey, Waitakere, New Zealand, Vice President
Mr. Michel Cibot, City Manager, Malakoff, France, Member of the Board
Mr. George Regan, President of the UK Nuclear Free Local Authorities
Ms. Jasmika Bajlo, Biograd na Moru, Croatia, Member of the Board
