Dear inhabitants of Sassnitz, guests and internet users,

Der Bürgermeister der Stadt Sassnitz

Welcome to the homepage of the town Sassnitz!
Thank you for your interest on our town - either as a businessman or a tourist. We hope you will get all the information you are looking for. You are welcome to ask for further information or to send us some advice on any kind of matter. In the following we'd like to provide you with some facts about Sassnitz;

lt is the second biggest town on the Isle of Ruegen and the northernmost in the state of Mecklenburg- Western Pomerania.

The famous German poet Theodor Fontane once visited Sassnitz as a tourist in 1895.In his novel"Effi Briest" the protagonist visits this place and says about it:

"From Stralsund to Ruegen... and on we go along the Jasmund Bodden to reach Sassnitz. To travel to Ruegen means to travel to Sassnitz."

Since then this sentence has been the slogan of our town. Sassnitz stretches south of the National Park Jasmund with its beech trees and its unique chalk coastline. The chalk cliff "Koenigstuhl" with a height of 117 metres is a popular tourist attraction for thousands of visitors every year.
Sassnitz is not only home for 12.000 people, but also a port town and a seaside resort. The ferry port of Mukran that is Part of the town Sassnitz offers ferry connections to Trelleborg (Sweden), Bornhohn (Demnark), Klaipeda (Lithuania) and freight lines to St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad (Russia) and other Baltic Sea neighbours.
Sassnitz has great business and trade potentials, not only considering the port area with a weIl- developed network of roads and rail lines (including a Russian wide gauge). An autobahn along the coast will be extended by 2005.
The infrastructure of the town port offers a lot of possibilities for tourism. There is for example the outstanding mole with a length of 1.450 metres. Fishery and fish processing industry have been established as a tradition for a long time.
The town of Sassnitz itself is directly situated at the Baltic Sea. Services, trades , handicrafts, the town administration and good social care make people feel home.
Tourism is an important economic factor for the isle. Sassnitz offers a high number of accomodations in its many hotels, hostels and holiday residences. From here it is easy to get to all places of interest and to discover the marvellous countryside, nature and wildlife. You can make boat trips along the chalk coastline of the national park. From Mukran you get to the flintstone fields which are unique in Europe. They reach back to the ice age. Until today the inhabitants of the island have their own cultural traditions which are something special.
Have a second look! If you visit Sassnitz you will recognize that there is still a lot to do! People who come regularly will soon discover that the face of the town has positively changed.
We love to live here, because the town takes a particular care for its inhabitants - and guests are always very welcome!
